South Carolina’s government is led by elected officials in both the executive and legislative branches. Voters elect nine statewide constitutional officers, including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General. The legislative branch, called the General Assembly, consists of two chambers: the 124‑member House of Representatives, whose members serve two‑year terms, and the 46‑member Senate, whose members serve four‑year terms, with age, residency, and citizenship requirements for each chamber.
At the county level, voters elect officials who manage local government and essential public services. These typically include a county council or supervisor and constitutional officers such as Sheriff, Clerk of Court, Treasurer, Auditor, Coroner, and Probate Judge, all of whom carry out responsibilities that directly affect daily life in the community.
